The third Godland trade, Proto Plastic Party, starts off really well. Issue 13 is real strong, featuring Adam Archer–I can’t remember if he has a superhero name… seems like all the villains have supervillain names–in an intergalactic prison, having all sorts of adventures with real emotional weight… and lots of funny lines.
Then the focus shifts to the villains, intergalactic, subhuman, and federal, for the rest of the issues. Casey’s also real interested in his 2001 revamp featuring Archer’s sister and there is some cool stuff to look at, but Casey’s spinning his wheels, lining things up for later on.
I really can’t say much of what I liked in issues 14-17–#18 has a cool fight scene–except in fragments. The skull-guy buying drugs is funny, the sister’s adventure in space is cool-looking, the spider-woman is really gross.
It took me about forty-five minutes to read all of these issues, maybe longer, not having anything to say about them isn’t a good sign. But Godland’s still on track, except instead of running (or walking briskly), it’s lolly-gagging (except #13, which is simply fantastic).
