All-Star Superman #8 by Grant Morrison and Frank Quitely

August 6th, 2007 · No Comments

Here’s what happens when a one-in-one series goes over to done-in-three or whatever. I’m guessing three, because we’re already at two and it’s not over yet.

I’m not complaining, not exactly, but when I read All-Star Superman I like a contained experience. The sum effect is a feeling I like, one I don’t often get from Superman comics or whatnot and I like that feeling. And I didn’t get it in #8. Instead, in a really weird way, I got Grant Morrison laying out the rest of the series–Lois Discovers a Big Secret! What’s in the Sun?!?! et cetera, et cetera.

At the same time, the actual Superman content, Superman hanging out on the Bizarro world with the only smart Bizarro is kind of neat, but it gets to be too much. Quitely’s Bizarros aren’t funny-looking, they’re horrifying. I kept them to start eating Superman. The issue takes place over a busy day and somehow the pacing–full of science or pseudo-science, I don’t know how well Morrison did his research–makes it all really boring. I was ready to take a nap when I got done with it.

So, all in all, the second worst issue of the series (after the first, which didn’t impress me).
