Not being a Judd Winick reader, I have no idea if Green Arrow and Black Canary is an accurate sample of his superhero writing. If it is accurate, he’s terrible. Not terrible in an exciting way though, just terrible. Dumb (and bad) exposition balloons, way too much dialogue at the wrong places… it’s really bad.
But that paragraph, unfortunately, does not contain my most (recently) blasphemous statement. Cliff Chiang’s superhero work–flashy with the computer (?) inks and all–is not impressive. It’s like he’s going for the “average” reader… and while I realize DC caters to people who think Scott McDaniel can draw… it’s a slight on Chiang’s abilities.
Still, it’s not a wholly awful three issues. The Amazons being bad guys, kind of interesting. Some of Green Arrow Sr.’s jokes? Funny. Winick’s writing of Black Canary… both good and bad. Dialogue’s questionable, attitude’s right.
Another thing… Green Arrow Jr. is totally gay. I know Chuck Dixon has him with as many women as possible as often as possible, but seriously… Connor Hawke is gay. I think Winick gets it though, which is really cool. Oh, and the ex-hooker with AIDS sidekick? Regardless of Winick trying to humanize the disease or whatever… he does an awful job writing her.

Reading Winnick has become a painful experience lately, because in no way do actual people talk in the pronouncements he puts in their mouths. Since you’re not familiar with his writing, I’m sorry to say the ex hooker/with aids pretty much shoehammers her background in just about every comic she’s in. Just to make it clear. I have to disagree with the Chiang art criticism, his clear linework, compositions that are spot on, and the bright, candy colors leave a warm, fuzzy taste in my tummy. Plus, his women are gorgeous. I wish more artists in comics today knew how to draw people attractively.

It doesn’t sound like you think it is terrible, it just sounds like you think it has good & bad points. Which is where I pretty much stand.

I have to agree with you on Winick, and completely disagree on Chiang, who was born to be the Justice League penciller-for-life.
