Supergirl #17 by Paul Kupperberg and Carmine Infantino

February 22nd, 2008 · No Comments

Kupperberg wraps up one of the series longer running subplots–Linda’s weird boss–as well as giving Supergirl some secret identity changes. Not changes so much as improvements, actually. And the headband. I’m wondering if the headband is a movie tie-in, since she was going to have the headband in the movie, I think. But the issue’s another one of Kupperberg’s nice, short present action ones. It takes place on a Saturday, starting in the morning, done in the mid-afternoon.

There are some really nice Infantino panels here too, while Supergirl’s looking for some kidnappers, and then the issue kicks off into a bunch of action, which he’s always good with. The pre-action elements are mostly Linda Danvers scenes, not really development (though there’s some good stuff comparing her secret identity to cousin Clark’s), but rather mounting chill time as she goes shopping with a friend. Kupperberg lays the seed for the secret identity improvement in the early scenes and, while it’s a nice move, it’s almost so discreetly resolved–I had to read the page twice to catch on–the issue ends on a calmer note than I was expecting.

Even though the silly robot shows up–seriously, it looks like something out of “Gobots”–the villains in this issue are pretty cool. Kupperberg manages to have kidnappers who don’t just tell the kidnapped to shut up and it plays well. Also, the mastermind at the end comes off both human and believable. It’s almost too bad it wasn’t a two-parter.
