Supergirl #18 by Paul Kupperberg and Carmine Infantino

A lot of filler in this issue. Kupperberg does three things with the issue on a whole: deals with Supergirl’s new look, Linda’s boyfriend’s probable deception, and Supergirl’s fight with an enemy of Argo City. The filler comes from the lead up to the third, which is nice, effective disaster movie filler and it goes down fine. It wasn’t until I was finished I realized not much happened in the issue besides foreshadowing and a funny scene with Supergirl getting compliments on her headband.

The Linda Danvers stuff is good as usual, the humanizing of the character. Even Supergirl has to worry about boyfriends, even Supergirl teases her cat about its affection being food-related. Kupperberg gets his nice complicated secret identity moment with Supergirl deciding not to discover what’s going on with her boyfriend.

While the bad guy does look like the Creature from the Black Lagoon in swim trunks, Infantino has some great art in this issue. Probably a panel a page is fantastic, alternating between fluidity of movement and some beautiful close-ups. The headband also looks good and Kupperberg gives it an added layer, a little bit of (potential) Earth superiority to Krypton.

It’s a filler issue, but necessary filler, well-done and beautifully illustrated. I’m getting sad the series is almost over.
