I missed these issues the first time around, the danger of multi-story-arc collections… I read the first arc and forgot about the second.
Actually, going straight from issue three to issue six works. These two issues, though they do show a lot of backstory in scene, are covered in conversation in the subsequent collection. The end of issue five is the end of issue eleven, it all wraps around.
These issues are nice groundwork, nice bridging, but they’re really kind of filler. I’d probably be saying something different if I hadn’t read the next issues first, but then, when I got around to reading those issues, I’d be griping about Aaron doing Marvel recaps or something.
I’m trying to think of something I learned about these characters in the two issues and, even though there’s lots of backstory, I’m not sure anything essential got filled in. In fact, given how things turn out, Aaron even goes for a really obvious turn of events with Bad Horse and his mother. I would have rather not known about it, since it’s the most contrived thing Aaron’s done the whole series so far.
The art’s good, but I’m a little confused about the aging from flashbacks to modern day. The Native Americans age. The white guy doesn’t.
I think, if I’d read the series in order, I’d have liked these issues more and the subsequent ones less. Or maybe there would have been enough time I forgot about these issues. It’s fine, they’re fine, but Scalped’s supposed to be better than fine.
