Supergirl #20 by Paul Kupperberg and Carmine Infantino

April 17th, 2008 · No Comments

Kupperberg handles Supergirl’s anniversary is handled a little goofy. It ties in to the Action Comics issue, paralleling Superman and Supergirl handling a similar situation. It’s not exact because there’s also the wrap-up (an exact parallel would have been a lot more interesting).

The problem is the lack of surprise. The Action Comics issue sort of ruins it, which means all there is to look forward to is the conclusion–as Supergirl’s battle with the Parasite is visually boring–where Superman throws Supergirl a party.

It might have been a good party, but the reader would never know, because we don’t get to see it at all. Instead, we spent the whole issue with the Parasite and so on.

Kupperberg does a neat thing with the time of the day, notating it as the story moves along. Even when it’s obvious there’s no urgency, there’s something nice about it.

I figured Kupperberg, after a couple years on the book, would come up with a better anniversary celebration. It’s too bad, because bringing Supergirl into the superhero community–after nineteen issues essentially solo–written by Kupperberg, would have been interesting.

Infantino’s art isn’t even engaging this issue–the only excellent panel is on the splash page.
