Fallen Angel #20 by Peter David and Dennis Calero

So Dennis Calero being experimental? Absolutely atrocious. I ignored the credits page when I started reading and flipped back when I was done. I can’t believe how terrible the art is in this issue. A lot of it looks like Photoshop filtered malarky. Very disappointed in Calero. Before I knew it was him, I figured they were just doing the art really, really cheap this issue.

It’s a terrible issue, art aside, too. It’s all about Jude being pissed off he’s stuck in Bete Noire. So much so, I don’t think there’s even any subplots in the issue. And Lee only shows up for three pages. The lack of Fallen Angel in Fallen Angel, wouldn’t matter so much if this issue weren’t just so stupid. Here’s the salient points. Jude doesn’t like being magistrate, Jude’s brother doesn’t like him being magistrate. That’s it. No character development, no plot developments, nothing.

In fact, David introduces an interesting idea–a fallen (well, falling) nun–and then turns it into a big twist.

The series–after that awful Shi crossover–has been on shaky ground for a while, David’s approach to his only non-Marvel work seeming like he writes it on the toilet.

I tend to like Fallen Angel, even at David’s more foolish turns, but this issue is indefensible waste.

It’s like David (and IDW) are so dedicated to keeping Fallen Angel running, it doesn’t even matter if it’s good–or competently produced anymore. I mean, lots of books do one offs with supporting characters in the focus, but comparing David to Ed Brubaker (who is a master of the one off), is like comparing drowning to winning the lotto.
