Fall of Cthulhu: Godwar 4

Wow, an exceptional cop-out. A limited series without a complete story, what an original idea. The art is so bad.

What the heck is this mess? It’s not just the art; the characters don’t even remain consistent from page to page.

The new artist is drawing Scooby-Doo. Nelson’s got a couple fine moments, but the art’s too bad for them to work.

Fall of Cthulhu: Godwar 1

The art is too broad (cartoonish) for the morose subject matter. It’s a team-up issue; hard to tell how it’ll go.

With Lucifer as the lead, the book feels a lot more grounded (for better or worse). Not much dumb sheriff; a solid read.

Fall of Cthulhu 13

December 18th, 2008 Comments

The sheriff’s one of the worst written characters I can think of. His solo scenes are asinine. But a good, creepy issue.

Art’s good with the girl, bad with the guys. Still more TV cop banter and posturing, but the Lucifer character’s strong.

Fall of Cthulhu 11

December 18th, 2008 Comments

The cop banter is a little pat, but the story is real effective. Some undercooked art, but it is on when it’s important.

After last issue’s strong art, Quiligotti is suddenly very lazy. He’s also the wrong artist for the content, style-wise.

Fall of Cthulhu 9

December 16th, 2008 Comments

The rhyming is annoying–masking the lack of content–but the art’s a detached beautiful, which makes it work as a piece.

Fall of Cthulhu 8

December 16th, 2008 Comments

This issue is the lacks humor more than any in the series. Good art. Should the Harlot’s cameo be the most engaging part?

Fall of Cthulhu 7

December 16th, 2008 Comments

Disturbing, if predictable, done in one. Nelson’s lack of personality in his writing is a strength. The art is fantastic.

Fall of Cthulhu 6

Nice art from Scott–but it’s hard to tell bearded men apart in low light. Nelson packs the issue with content very well.

Fall of Cthulhu 5

December 16th, 2008 Comments

The close is very strong visually, but the story lacks. It’s too fast a wrap-up. The lack of narrative transitions hurts.

Fall of Cthulhu 4

December 16th, 2008 Comments

There are some real technical writing problems here (internal narration), but it is an effective issue due to the twists.

Fall of Cthulhu 3

December 16th, 2008 Comments

More logic problems with the protagonist’s actions, the girlfirend’s outfit is absurd, but the issue’s still quite solid.

Fall of Cthulhu 2

December 16th, 2008 Comments

It’s just amazing how much the issue works without the girlfriend. The lead’s a little too stupid though. Good dream art.

Fall of Cthulhu 1

December 16th, 2008 Comments

Some good art in close-ups, not in medium shots. Fine writing, but the girlfriend and pop culture references do not work.

Fall of Cthulhu 0

December 10th, 2008 Comments

Lots of goofy, scary sounding proper nouns muddle the writing–along with intentional opaqueness. The art’s solid though.
